Early Life

Palermo, 1970s–1980s: the making of "El Loco."

Family

Javier Gerardo Milei was born 22 October 1970 in Buenos Aires to Norberto Horacio Milei — a bus driver who later became a businessman — and Alicia Lucich, a homemaker. The family lived in the Palermo neighborhood. Milei has described his father as violent and his home life as harsh; these are his accounts, given in interviews, not independently documented.

School

He attended Catholic schools in Buenos Aires. Classmates nicknamed him “El Loco” (The Madman) — for his temper and outbursts, by his own telling. The nickname stuck for life and became part of his public brand. His academic record from these years is not a matter of public record; what is documented begins with his university economics degree (1993).

Football

As a teenager Milei played goalkeeper in the youth divisions of Chacarita Juniors, a Buenos Aires club. He has said football was an early passion and an escape; the goalkeeper detail is among the most-repeated facts of his youth biography.

Music

He sang in Everest, a Rolling Stones cover band, in his youth — a detail that fits the rock-star persona he later cultivated on television and at rallies (where rock anthems, not folk or tango, are the soundtrack).

The grandmother

Milei has said his maternal grandmother was the defining maternal figure of his childhood, effectively raising him, and that he considered her his true mother. Biographers note the theme recurs in his telling of his life: distant parents, a devoted grandmother, and later an intensely close bond with his sister Karina.

Record limits. Almost everything on this page comes from Milei's own interviews. Argentine journalists have corroborated the outline (Palermo upbringing, Chacarita, Everest, the economics degree) but not the interior details of family conflict. This site presents his account as his account.
