UN Speeches
Three speeches that carried her from Katowice to the world stage — quoted verbatim from the transcripts.
COP24, Katowice — 12 December 2018
Her first major UN address, to the climate summit’s plenary in Katowice, Poland. Speaking to negotiators, she said:
“You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes.”

She continued: “Until you start focusing on what needs to be done rather than what is politically possible, there is no hope. We can’t solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis.” The speech established her template: short, blunt, addressed directly to the powerful in the room.
UN Climate Action Summit, New York — 23 September 2019
The defining speech of her career, delivered to heads of state at UN headquarters. Verbatim passages:
“I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”

“People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”

“The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.”

“You must unite behind the science. You must take action. You must do the impossible. Because giving up is never ever an option.”

On the same day, she and 15 other children filed a formal complaint to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, arguing that five countries’ inaction on climate violated the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The committee later dismissed the complaint on procedural grounds (the petitioners had not first exhausted domestic remedies) while acknowledging the substance of the climate concern — reported by AP and others in October 2021.
European Parliament, Strasbourg — 16 April 2019
Addressing the European Parliament’s environment committee, she warned:
“Around the year 2030, 10 years, 252 days and 10 hours away from now, we will be in a position where we set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control, that will most likely lead to the end of our civilisation as we know it.”

The specific countdown figure reflected the carbon-budget arithmetic cited from IPCC reports at the time; the “irreversible chain reaction” language was her own characterization of tipping-point risks described in climate science.
How the speeches were received
The Katowice and Strasbourg speeches were covered as serious interventions; the New York speech was a global media event — excerpted on every major network within hours, parodied, memed, and quoted by both supporters and critics. Supporters called it a moral reckoning; critics called it emotional manipulation of a child — both reactions are documented on Criticism and Response. This page records what was said, where, and when.
