The Business Empire
Ninety-four restaurants on three continents — how one chef's name became a global hospitality group.
The shape of the group
The Gordon Ramsay group operates 94 restaurants worldwide: 37 in the United Kingdom, 35 in the United States, and 22 elsewhere (PA News, February 2025). The portfolio runs from the three-Michelin-star flagship on Royal Hospital Road to burger counters and fish-and-chip shops — a deliberate ladder from fine dining to fast casual, all trading on the same name and the same promise of standards.
How it grew
The expansion came in waves. The fine-dining years (1998–2008) built the prestige base: the flagship, Pétrus, Claridge’s, the New York opening. The brasserie years (2011 onward) built the volume: Bread Street Kitchen in 2011 became the template for approachable, high-turnover restaurants. The American years (2012 onward) built the scale: Las Vegas — Steak, Burger, Fish & Chips, and the Hell’s Kitchen restaurants — then a national rollout.
Behind the scenes, the group restructured more than once. The original Gordon Ramsay Holdings gave way to Gordon Ramsay Restaurants; outside investment funded the American expansion. Ramsay himself has remained the public face and, by all accounts, the final arbiter of standards.
The split that made headlines
Not all of it lasted. The Claridge’s residency ended in 2013 in a much-reported split. The New York restaurant closed. Maze, the Mayfair restaurant opened in 2005, closed in 2015. In 2017, Ramsay’s father-in-law and former business associate Chris Hutcheson was jailed for six months at the Old Bailey for hacking the Ramsays’ company emails — a family dispute that played out in public and in the courts.
The brand beyond the pass
The name now extends past restaurants: more than twenty cookbooks, television formats sold worldwide, the Gordon Ramsay Academy cooking school, and licensed products. But the core economics remain the dining rooms — and the flagship, still three-starred after two decades, remains the proof that the brand is anchored in real cooking, not just fame.
