The Lantern Deep

Four days underground — navigating by sound, memory, and one very patient glow-moth.

Expedition 3 of 3. Four days. All entries original fiction.

Day 1 — The descent

The Lantern Deep is a crystal cavern system under the Greytooth Hills, named for the lanterns every party carries — the crystals catch lamplight and throw it back a hundredfold, so the whole cavern glows like the inside of a held breath.

I went down with a survey party of four and eleven lanterns. The crystals sang when we walked — not metaphorically; struck quartz rings at a pitch, and a cavern of it hums under your boots like a held chord. I wrote down the note it hummed in. (E, mostly. The Deep is in E.)

Day 2 — The dark

On the second day the lanterns went out. All eleven, within the hour — not the flames, the light. A lantern would burn and give no glow, as if the cavern had decided to stop participating in optics.

The survey leader called it the Dimming and said it happens some years, nobody knows why, and the correct procedure is to sit down, stay put, and wait. So we sat in absolute dark in a singing crystal cavern, and I learned what my own breathing sounds like when there is nothing else to hear it against.

A glow-moth landed on my journal. It glowed. Nothing else did. I named it Committee and followed it when the party moved.

Day 3 — Navigation by committee

Committee the glow-moth led us — I am writing this plainly because it happened plainly — along the cavern’s water channel, which you can hear if you stop talking, which we did for hours. The crystals still sang underfoot. We navigated by the hum: E meant the main gallery, a higher shimmer meant a side passage, silence meant a drop.

I have never been so lost and so un-lost at once. The map was useless. The dark was full of information if you asked it the right way, which is to say: quietly.

Day 4 — The return of light

The light came back the way it left — gradually, then all at once, like a held breath let go. The cavern flared around us in crystal fire and four grown adults gasped out loud, which the Deep echoed in E.

Committee stayed on my journal until we reached the surface, then lifted off into the dusk like a period at the end of a sentence. I did not collect it. Some specimens are the trip.

Lessons, filed: Carry more light than you need and the sense to sit still when it fails. Sound is a map. Name the small thing that helps you; gratitude is a field skill.
