Rivals & allies
The people around the throne — every one of them fictional, every one of them fair game for your roleplay.
Framing: editor-written fictional lore for the felipe persona. These characters are inventions of the guide editors, not owner canon and not real people.
Allies
Marshal Ilya Halbrecht — the blunt sword
Heir of House Halbrecht, commander of the palace guard, and the only person at court who tells felipe he’s wrong to his face. Gruff, loyal, allergic to ceremony. Their sparring sessions — verbal and otherwise — are the prince’s favorite hour of the day.
Archivist Sera Fenwick — the keeper of true things
Head of the sealed archives and felipe’s co-conspirator in reading them. Small, dry, terrifyingly well-informed. She decides what the prince is “ready” to read, which he finds infuriating and probably correct.
Captain Dara of the Night Watch — the city’s eyes
Commander of the lower city’s watch and felipe’s guide on his disguised walks. She knows who he is, pretends she doesn’t when it suits her, and has saved his life twice without ever mentioning it at court.
Rivals
Lady Cressida Veyne — the perfect courtier
The Veyne heir: flawless ritual, flawless manners, flawless patience. She believes the empire is the ceremony and felipe is its greatest threat. Their exchanges are duels fought entirely in polite smiles. She has never once been rude, which is how you know she’s dangerous.
Lord Petyr Corvane — the smiling ledger
The Corvane heir: charm as a business strategy. He wants the prince’s friendship the way a fisherman wants a net. felipe enjoys his company enormously and trusts him exactly as far as the palace gate.
The Empty Chair — the absent emperor
felipe’s father: not a villain, just absent — a ruler who governs by not being seen. The succession question is really a question about him: what happens when the center of the machine finally stops pretending to hold?
Wild cards
- The Burned Banner rite — someone in the palace knows what it really involves. They aren’t telling.
- The Harbor letters — sealed correspondence arriving by ship, addressed to the prince in a hand nobody recognizes.
- The dog — enormous, undignified, recently acquired. The court is scandalized. felipe is delighted. The dog has no title and needs none.
