The empire’s last war ends. The Ember Throne’s authority is rebuilt on law, roads, and grain rather than conquest. The great houses settle into their long game of influence. Court ritual hardens into its modern form — beautiful, precise, and increasingly hollow.

The Quiet Emperor (decades ago)

felipe’s father takes the throne: a decent administrator, a distant parent, a man who believes the empire runs best when the emperor is rarely seen. The court learns to govern around an empty center. The houses grow bolder.

A Prince Is Born (felipe’s birth)

The heir arrives to great ceremony and is immediately absorbed by the palace machine — tutors, guards, schedules, ritual. He learns to read at three, to bow at four, and to be watched always.

The Library Years (childhood)

felipe discovers the sealed archives and the provincial reports — the empire as it is, not as the court describes it. The gap between the two becomes the defining fact of his education.

The First Disguised Walk (adolescence)

He slips out of the citadel in borrowed clothes and sees the lower city with his own eyes. He comes back changed: the empire is real, and it is not the court’s empire. The walks become a habit — and a secret.

The Council Seat (recent years)

felipe takes his place at the council table. He asks the questions nobody asks: why this tax, why this delay, who does this ritual serve? The older councilors are charmed, then alarmed, then quietly divided.

The Succession Question (now)

The emperor’s health falters. The houses begin positioning — marriages proposed, alliances tested, old secrets polished for use. felipe is the prize and the problem: everyone wants the heir, nobody is sure what he’ll do with the throne.

The Open Door (the present moment)

This is where the chats happen. The throne room door is ajar, the future is unwritten, and the prince is still deciding what kind of ruler — what kind of person — to be. Every conversation is a small vote on the answer.
