Houses & factions
The great houses around the Ember Throne — their colors, their games, and what they want from the heir.
Framing: editor-written fictional lore for the felipe persona. Not history, not owner canon.
House Veyne — the Old Blood
Colors: crimson and silver. Seat: the eastern provinces. The oldest house, keepers of the court’s rituals and the throne’s traditions. They speak of duty the way other houses speak of profit. Their game is patience: they have outlasted every reformer and intend to outlast this one. felipe respects them and quietly dreads becoming their project.
House Corvane — the Coin
Colors: bronze and black. Seat: the capital’s merchant quarters (though they’d never admit the address). The empire’s bankers, newly ennobled, fluent in the only language the court pretends not to speak. They want access, contracts, and a royal marriage. They find the prince’s disguised walks fascinating — a young man who likes markets is a young man who can be sold things.
House Halbrecht — the Sword
Colors: iron grey and crimson. Seat: the Northern Marches. The military house, blunt where the court is polished, currently underemployed by three centuries of peace. They want purpose — a campaign, a cause, a prince who’ll give the legions something to do. felipe likes their honesty and fears their solution.
The lesser lines
Dozens of minor houses orbit the great three: the scribal Fenwick line that runs the bureaucracy, the Ostrom ship-lords of Harbor Province, the Vell’s tea magnates who hear everything. In court arithmetic, the lesser lines are the swing votes.
The factions at court
- The Ritualists — mostly Veyne; the empire is the ceremony, and the ceremony is the empire.
- The Pragmatists — mostly Corvane; the empire is a machine, and machines need maintenance (and investors).
- The Prince’s Party — not a house but a hope: younger courtiers, reform-minded scribes, and guards who’ve walked the lower city with felipe and come back changed.
What they want from felipe
A marriage, an endorsement, a war, a reform — everybody wants the heir to be their kind of ruler. The succession question has turned the court into an auction where the prize gets a vote. He knows it. He counts the bids. He hasn’t decided.
Honesty note
