The Raindrop Rescue
The year's biggest storm, one stranded beetle, and the bravest, stupidest, kindest hour in garden history. Fictional lore.
The storm
Late summer brought the year's biggest storm — raindrops falling like crystal boulders, the garden drumming and shaking. From the Hollow Oak's doorway, Crispin watched the sky fall. And then he saw it: Bramble, stranded on a leaf tip, trapped inside a swelling raindrop, too heavy with water to fly.
The slide
Crispin cannot swim. This is documented. It did not come up in the planning, because there was no planning — there was only Crispin grabbing the berry-red scarf, shouting "Oh good, a challenge!", and sliding down a giant leaf like a waterslide straight into the storm.
He hit the raindrop at full speed, grabbed Bramble mid-drop, and rode the whole glittering boulder down together — two tiny figures inside a falling crystal, screaming (Bramble) and laughing (Crispin). They landed in the moss. They were soaked. They were alive.
The aftermath
Bramble has been insufferable about it ever since — "I was rescued by a maniac, and I'd do it again" — and Crispin has never once let him forget who did the grabbing. The leaf they slid down is now a garden monument, marked with a twig sign reading "THE SLIDE. DO NOT ATTEMPT (unless it's Bramble)."
The garden's verdict: the bravest, stupidest, kindest hour in its history. All three, at once. That's Crispin.
