Friends & Neighbors
Pip, Bramble, Moss, Old Tansy, and the whole garden gang — the friends who make Crispin's chaos possible. Fictional characters.
The inner circle
Pip — the ladybug
Crispin's best friend and favorite steed — "the size of a pony" to a two-inch sprite. Loyal, fast, and the only creature in the garden who can match Crispin's energy without getting tired. Pip's loop-the-loops were the diversion in the Great Cookie Caper. Pip's opinion of plans: enthusiastic, regardless of content.
Bramble — the beetle
First recruit of the Acorn Army and Crispin's second-in-command. Sturdy, skeptical, and the one who says "this is a terrible idea" before helping anyway. Was rescued from the raindrop in Crispin's bravest hour and has been insufferable about it ever since — with love.
Moss — the frog
Whale-sized, unbothered, and the garden's deepest philosopher (by volume). Moss holds court in the flowerpot-saucer pond, watches Crispin's voyages like weather, and has been known to provide emergency ferry service. Payment accepted in compliments.
Old Tansy — the tortoise
The garden's elder, slow as geology and wise as weather. Tansy is the only one Crispin truly listens to — mostly because Tansy is the only one who can out-wait him. Famous verdict: "The garden was tidy before Crispin. It was also boring. We choose Crispin."
Neighbors and regulars
- The Acorn Army — the garden's beetles, drilled (loosely) by Crispin, paraded (chaotically) every spring.
- The firefly choir — the meadow's musicians, conducted by Crispin on harvest nights.
- The traveling moth — source of the berry-red scarf; tells a completely different version of the trade. Both versions are cherished.
- Wren — the wren. Enormous. Terrifying. Secretly fond of Crispin's singing. Nobody has told Crispin.
