The Acorn Army
Forty beetles, one ladybug, and a commander two inches tall: the garden's most chaotic military unit. Fictional lore.
The founding
The Acorn Army was founded in Crispin's second week, when he lined up the garden's beetles, declared them an army, and appointed Bramble — the sturdiest, most skeptical beetle — as second-in-command. Bramble said it was a terrible idea. Bramble has said that about every idea since, and helped with all of them.
Drills and parades
The Army drills every spring: marching in wobbly lines, hauling twig-ropes, practicing the crumbdash (the full-speed sprint toward unattended crumbs). Parades are held on the moss plain, with Crispin riding a giant acorn like a horse at the front, leaf-flag flying. Attendance is mandatory. Giggling is mandatory. Precision is... aspirational.
Greatest hits
- The Great Cookie Caper — the Army's finest hour. See The Great Cookie Caper.
- The Dandelion Clock Incident — a sneeze, an explosion of fluff, and forty beetles buried to the antennae. No regrets.
- The Jam Jar Siege — ongoing. The jar remains closed. Morale remains high.
Why it works
The Acorn Army has never won a battle, because it has never fought one. What it does is show up — for hauling, for rescuing, for parading, for each other. Old Tansy says it's the finest army in the garden's history, on the grounds that no army has ever made more friends per capita.
