Pre-Politics Career
Housing counselor, rapper, campaign manager — the decade between Bowdoin and the Assembly.
Foreclosure-prevention housing counselor
After graduating from Bowdoin College in 2014, Mamdani worked as a foreclosure-prevention housing counselor in Queens, helping homeowners navigate mortgage distress and avoid losing their homes. He has repeatedly described the work as formative: it put him in living rooms across the borough with families facing eviction, and it is the biographical root he cites for his tenant-focused politics. The job predates his elected career by six years and is one of the most consistently cited facts in his profiles.
Mr. Cardamom
Alongside the counseling work, Mamdani performed as a rapper under the names “Mr. Cardamom” and “Young Cardamom,” releasing the mixtape Sidereal in 2016. The music — playful and New York-inflected — was a genuine creative pursuit, not a campaign prop; it only became widely known when reporters dug into his background during the 2025 mayoral race. Supporters found it charming; it also became a ready-made symbol for profile writers of a candidate who did not fit the traditional mold.
Campaign operative
Mamdani learned electoral politics from the staff side. He was campaign manager for Khader El-Yateem’s 2017 City Council bid in Brooklyn, managed Ross Barkan’s campaign for State Senate, and organized for Tiffany Cabán’s insurgent 2019 run for Queens district attorney — a near-miss progressive campaign that became a template for left challengers in the borough. He joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017, the organizational home that would later power his own runs.
The through line
The pre-politics decade reads as an apprenticeship: housing counseling supplied the issue (tenants), the campaigns supplied the craft (field organizing, insurgent primaries), and DSA supplied the network. When Mamdani challenged five-term incumbent Aravella Simotas for Assembly District 36 in 2020, he was not a novice but a trained operative running his own race for the first time.
