First Months in Office
January to September 2026 — the inauguration, the wins, the lawsuits, and the pending promises. Every claim date-stamped.
The inauguration (January 1, 2026)
Mamdani was sworn in twice on New Year’s Day: first at a private midnight ceremony in the decommissioned City Hall subway station — his wife Rama Duwaji holding the Quran as state attorney general Letitia James administered the oath — then at a public ceremony on the City Hall steps, where Senator Bernie Sanders administered a second oath, with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also appearing at the ceremony. A block party, the “Inauguration of a New Era,” filled Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes. In his address he declared: “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist.” (NPR affiliate KACU; beaconjournal; January 2026.)
Personnel
- First Deputy Mayor: Dean Fuleihan, a veteran of city budget and labor roles.
- NYPD Commissioner: Jessica Tisch, kept on from the Adams administration — a continuity signal that drew both praise and criticism (January 2026).
Childcare: the 2K program (March 3, 2026)
With Governor Kathy Hochul, Mamdani announced 2,000 free childcare places for two-year-olds starting fall 2026, expanding toward 12,000 the next year — state-funded at $73 million in year one and $425 million in year two, with no new city tax increases. “We’re making what Wall Street would call a good investment,” he said. (Reuters, March 3, 2026.) The rollout began in fall 2026.
The rent freeze (June 25, 2026)
The independent Rent Guidelines Board voted 7–1 to freeze rents on one- and two-year rent-stabilized leases for October 2026–September 2027 — roughly a million apartments, two million New Yorkers — fulfilling the campaign’s central housing pledge. Mamdani: “This is the relief that working people across our city deserve.” (prismnews.org; tbanewsnetwork; June 2026.) In July 2026 a landlord group represented by former first deputy mayor Randy Mastro sued to block the freeze, alleging a “sham process”; a judge declined to rule before October 1, with a decision expected by end of 2026. (The City Reporter, September 24, 2026.)
Still pending (as of September 2026)
- Fare-free buses: unresolved in budget negotiations (Reuters, March 2026; democrata.es, September 2026).
- Municipal grocery stores: five-store pilot in site/operator selection; first store expected 2027 (democrata.es, September 2026).
- Housing construction: the “Block by Block” plan (200,000 homes on public land, East Harlem rezoning) announced; details developing (Wikipedia 2026 tracking — confirm against primary reporting).
The White House meeting (November 21, 2025)
Just before taking office, Mamdani met President Trump in the Oval Office — a de-escalation after campaign-era hostility. Trump: “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him — a big help, because I want New York City to be great.” (NPR, November 21, 2025.)
