Endorsements & Criticism
The cheers and the fire — every claim attributed to its author, never to this site.
Endorsements
- Bernie Sanders — the Vermont senator endorsed Mamdani’s 2025 campaign and administered the public oath at his January 1, 2026 inauguration.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — the Queens/Bronx representative endorsed the campaign and appeared at the inauguration ceremony.
- Working Families Party — lent its ballot line to Mamdani in the general election.
- Democratic Socialists of America — his political home since 2017; the 2025 win was DSA’s most prominent electoral success of the cycle.
- Brad Lander — the former city comptroller and 2025 primary contender; his endorsement of Mamdani over Cuomo was widely read as a signal to progressive and Jewish voters.
Supporters’ case, in their words: an energetic, working-class-focused campaign that expanded the electorate and proved a left cost-of-living platform could win citywide.
Criticism
- The American Jewish Committee — CEO Ted Deutch has publicly criticized Mamdani’s rhetoric on Israel and his refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which he has called incitement. Jewish groups also criticized Mamdani in January 2026 for scrapping executive orders on antisemitism. (AJC’s characterization, presented as theirs.)
- Members of Congress — including Rep. Dan Goldman, who called “globalize the intifada” antisemitic and pressed Mamdani on it; Mamdani responded in a June 2025 interview that it is “not language I use.” (Attributed accounts.)
- Andrew Cuomo’s campaign — attacked Mamdani’s Israel positions and his fitness for office throughout 2025.
- Donald Trump — called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” on social media during the campaign, endorsed Cuomo the day before the election, and threatened to withhold federal funds if Mamdani won; he later met Mamdani warmly at the White House on November 21, 2025, saying “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.”
- Fiscal critics — argued his agenda (fare-free buses, universal childcare, municipal groceries) would strain city finances; specific deficit figures from partisan outlets are omitted as unverifiable.
Critics’ case, in their words: that his Israel positions and socialist label make him unfit or dangerous for the office, and that his spending pledges are unaffordable.
