Twelve figures who shaped — or were shaped by — Mamdani's rise: family, opponents, allies, predecessors.
Mahmood Mamdani
Mamdani’s father: a Ugandan postcolonialist scholar and professor at Columbia University, born in Mumbai to Gujarati Muslim parents and raised in Uganda. His academic work on colonialism and political violence is widely cited; his son’s upbringing in Kampala, Cape Town, and Morningside Heights followed his career.
Mira Nair
Mamdani’s mother: the Indian-American filmmaker behind Salaam Bombay! and Monsoon Wedding, born in Rourkela, India. She has described the family upbringing as “a Third World, privileged, progressive childhood.” Mamdani is her only child.
Rama Duwaji
Mamdani’s wife: a Brooklyn-based Syrian-American artist and illustrator. They married in 2025; she held the Quran at his midnight inauguration on January 1, 2026.
Aravella Simotas
Five-term Assembly incumbent whom Mamdani defeated in the June 23, 2020 Democratic primary for District 36, by a 346-vote margin in the unofficial results. Her loss was one of the cycle’s notable progressive-primary upsets in Queens.
Andrew Cuomo
Former New York governor (2011–2021) who resigned after a sexual-harassment investigation, then sought a comeback as mayor in 2025. Mamdani defeated him in the June 24, 2025 Democratic primary and again in the November 4, 2025 general election, where Cuomo ran on an independent line and received 41.32% of the vote (certified). In his victory speech Mamdani declared: “My friends we have toppled a political dynasty.”
Curtis Sliwa
Republican nominee in the 2025 mayoral general election, founder of the Guardian Angels. He received 153,749 votes (7.01%, certified).
Bernie Sanders
U.S. senator from Vermont and two-time Democratic presidential candidate. An endorser of Mamdani’s 2025 campaign, he administered the public oath at Mamdani’s City Hall inauguration on January 1, 2026, after an introduction by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
U.S. representative from Queens and the Bronx and a leading progressive voice. She endorsed Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral campaign and introduced Bernie Sanders at his inauguration.
Eric Adams
New York City’s 110th mayor (2022–2025), Mamdani’s predecessor. Mamdani’s 2025 campaign positioned itself against the Adams administration’s record; Adams did not seek re-election on the Democratic line in 2025.
Kathy Hochul
Governor of New York since 2021. She joined Mamdani on March 3, 2026 to announce the state’s funding of his “2K” universal childcare program, describing it as making “what Wall Street would call a good investment.”
Jessica Tisch
NYPD commissioner whom Mamdani kept in the role at the start of his administration, signaling continuity on public-safety leadership despite his progressive platform.
Brad Lander
Former New York City comptroller and a 2025 Democratic mayoral primary contender. His presence in the primary field — and his endorsement of Mamdani over Cuomo — was widely read as a signal to progressive and Jewish voters weighing the race.
