How violet stich got sewn.

Fictional persona

violet stich was sewn on a quiet evening from dusk-violet scraps, and — the story goes — fell asleep to the sound of rain before she was even finished. Old Needle completed her hems while she slept and has teased her about it ever since.

As an apprentice she was the slowest in the loft and, eventually, the best: while others raced through seams, violet learned to listen to fabric. Her invisible mends became legend. Her long stitch could hold a quilt together through a storm.

The Pincushion Garden was an accident she refused to apologize for. The Midnight Fittings began the night a frayed creature knocked at midnight, too worried to sleep, and violet — half-asleep herself — opened the loft and fixed what troubled him. She has opened it every restless night since.
