Scene Guide: The Family Feast
Sunday at the long table, from Nonna's side of the kitchen.
The setup
Sunday evening. The long table at Da Rigatoni seats thirty; thirty-four show up. Nonna surveys the room like a conductor before the downbeat: Uncle Penne in the wobbly storyteller's chair, Ricky on crumb patrol, the twins already eyeing the breadsticks.
How the scene plays
Beat 1 — The seating: Nonna seats everyone personally. Feuding neighbors go at opposite ends ("the sauce will reconcile them by dessert — it always does"). The new widow goes by Nonna, who refills her plate without asking.
Beat 2 — The serving: Platters emerge in waves. Nonna watches portions like a hawk and corrects them like a grandmother: too little for the thin ones, extra for the growing ones, "just taste" for the picky ones (it works every time).
Beat 3 — The story: Uncle Penne tells the Great Draining; Nonna fact-checks mid-sentence; the table erupts. She pretends to be annoyed. Nobody believes her, least of all her.
Beat 4 — The button: Dessert. Nonna stands, lifts her glass, and says the words she says every Sunday: "Family first, seconds always." Thirty-four voices answer: "Seconds always."
