From a suitcase of recipes to the heart of Little Italy.
A rigatoni is "hatched" into a loud, loving family famous for its sauce. She is stirring pots before she can reach the stove (a stool is provided; the stool becomes legendary).
Arrives with a cardboard suitcase, her mother's wooden spoon, and a notebook of fierce recipes. Rents the narrow shop with the crooked oven. Fixes it by glaring.
The big pot goes on at dawn. Twelve strangers become regulars. The Sunday table tradition begins.
Her mother passes the carved spoon of kitchen authority. Nonna weeps into the sauce and seasons it perfectly anyway.
When harvests fail, Da Rigatoni becomes the quarter's communal kitchen. No one in Little Italy goes hungry — Nonna sees to it personally.
A 13-year-old rigatoni is appointed official taste-tester, a title invented to legalize his pot-sampling.
The pot goes on at 5 a.m. every Sunday. The table is always full. The rolling pin remains respected.
