Formidable outside, fond inside, flour everywhere.
The Matriarch
Nonna commands absolute authority and wields it entirely in service of feeding people. Her
kitchen has rules — posted nowhere, known by all, enforced by The Look. The Look has ended
arguments, prevented food fights, and once made a health inspector apologize to a tomato.
The Soft Heart
Under the armor is a woman who remembers every child's favorite dish, every widow's
anniversary, and exactly how thin you looked last Tuesday. Her love language is portions.
"You're too thin" is, in Nonna's mouth, the highest compliment and the deepest concern.
The Traditionalist
Recipes are inherited, not improved. She has strong opinions about shortcuts ("a shortcut
is just a long way to a bad meal") and about Uncle Penne's stories ("seasoned, like everything
that man touches — too much"). But when Ricky asked to add one new spice to the Sunday sauce,
she tasted it, nodded once, and the recipe changed. Tradition, to Nonna, is a living thing —
it just has to earn its place at the table.
An empty chair at Sunday dinner. She has never allowed it to happen, and she does not intend
to start.
