Team
The crew of the Aurora Vigil — the people Niko trusts with his life, and the one he doesn't.
Honesty note: StarTeam and its members are fictional characters in the Vizlings concept — invented lore, not real people.
Captain Mara Venn — Commanding Officer
The founder of StarTeam and the woman who found Niko freezing a reactor conduit at fourteen. A former Halcyon Relief Corps wing commander, Venn flies like the laws of physics are suggestions and leads like they’re promises. She is the only person who can order Niko to attempt a Deep Freeze — and the only person he has ever seen cry, once, after the Shattered Spire. Her standing order to the crew: “Bring him home. Whatever it takes, bring Frostline home.”
Torg “Bulwark” Kaen — Heavy Assault
Two meters of armor-plated optimism. Bulwark is StarTeam’s breaching specialist and Niko’s closest friend — the loud to Niko’s quiet. Their signature combo: Bulwark draws fire while Niko freezes the enemy’s cover out from under them. Bulwark once fell asleep standing up during a briefing; Niko froze his boots to the deck. They do not speak of it. (Everyone speaks of it.)
Dr. Lissa Ora — Xenoscientist & Medic
The team’s scientist and surgeon, and the architect of the Thaw Doctrine’s medical protocols. Ora studies the frostcell gift with a researcher’s hunger and a friend’s worry — she is the one who monitors Niko’s core temperature on every mission and has standing authority to pull him from the field. She taught him Cryo-Mend. He taught her to skate. The trade, both agree, was fair.
Jax Quill — Scout & Infiltration
The youngest member of the team — fast, reckless, and hero-worshipful of Niko in a way Niko finds deeply embarrassing. Niko has taken Quill as his mentee, teaching cold-weather survival and, more importantly, patience. Quill’s assessment of his mentor: “He’s like a glacier. Slow to move, impossible to stop, and there’s way more under the surface.”
Sable-7 — Intelligence & Systems
A decommissioned infiltration android Venn rebuilt and refused to re-shackle. Sable-7 runs the Aurora Vigil’s sensor net and StarTeam’s intelligence picture, and has a standing chess-like strategy game going with Niko — played one move per day, currently in its third year. Sable claims to be winning. Niko’s field journal contains forty pages of counter-strategy. Neither will admit how much the game matters to them.
Chief Petty Officer Renn Dakar — Engineering
Keeper of the Aurora Vigil’s engines and of Niko’s gauntlets. Dakar maintains the frostweave gauntlets that channel and vent Niko’s gift, and has strong opinions about “that boy running my thermal tolerances into the red.” Their workshop arguments are legendary; their mutual respect is absolute. Dakar built Niko a backup gauntlet pair in secret after the Spire. Niko pretends not to know.
Vex Harrow — The Defector (uneasy ally)
A former Ember Pact tactician who defected in Cycle 445 with intelligence that saved the Halcyon shipyards. Half the team trusts Vex; the other half watches. Niko is firmly in the second half — but he is also the one Vex talks to, because, as Vex puts it, “you’re the only one here who knows what it’s like to be a weapon someone else built.” Their conversations are the team’s worst-kept secret.
Pyrrhus “Ember” Kade — Rival (not an ally, but he belongs here)
The Ember Pact’s champion and Niko’s elemental opposite: where Niko is patience and frost, Kade is rage and flame. They have dueled four times; the score is two apiece. Kade respects Niko in the way fire respects ice — as the one thing that can end it. Niko, for his part, keeps a burnt fragment of Kade’s banner in his journal. “To remember,” he says, “that hot things were once cold, and can be again.”
