StarTeam History
A crew founded on a refusal — to watch the lanes burn, and to treat people as weapons.
Honesty note: StarTeam is a fictional crew in a fictional universe — invented lore, not real history.
The founding (Cycle 432)
StarTeam began with Captain Mara Venn’s resignation. A Halcyon Relief Corps wing commander with a distinguished record and a growing disgust for the Corps’ politics, Venn watched relief convoys get sold to raiders by the same bureaucracy that ordered her to protect them. She resigned her commission, bought a decommissioned long-range cruiser at a salvage auction — the future Aurora Vigil — and posted a single open call: “Crew wanted for dangerous honest work. No slavers, no cowards, no one who sees people as cargo.”
Eleven people answered. Four stayed past the first year. The ones who stayed became StarTeam.
The early years (Cycles 432–438)
The early StarTeam was a relief crew with teeth — escorting medical convoys, breaking blockades, and learning, mission by mission, that the Halcyon Sector’s problem wasn’t a lack of heroes but a lack of persistence. Venn’s doctrine took shape: show up, hold the line, leave the place better, come back if it isn’t.
It was during these years that Venn met Niko — the fourteen-year-old freezing a reactor conduit while the adults stood back (Cycle 430), then the academy’s quietest and most relentless student. She didn’t recruit him for his gift. She recruited him because, when she asked why he’d risked himself for strangers, he said: “The cold was already there. I just asked it to help.”
Niko’s arrival (Cycle 439)
Niko’s swearing-in changed the team’s character. Before him, StarTeam solved problems with speed and firepower. After him, they had a third option: stillness. His first mission — the Shatter Belt convoy — demonstrated the Frostline doctrine in miniature: end the fight before it starts, take prisoners, leave no one behind.
The crew’s nickname for those early missions: “the cold years.” Bulwark claims he coined it. Sable-7’s records show Niko said it first. Bulwark disputes the records.
The Ember Pact war (Cycle 441–present)
When the Ember Pact began raiding the trade lanes, StarTeam became, almost by accident, the sector’s shield. They were simply the crew that kept showing up. The war gave Niko his defining rivalry (Kade), his defining wound (the Spire), and his defining doctrine (the Thaw Doctrine) — and it gave StarTeam its purpose, stated in Venn’s standing order: “Where the lanes run, we run. Where people can’t protect themselves, we stand.”
What StarTeam is — and isn’t
StarTeam is not a military, not a corporation, and not a government. It takes contracts from colonies and convoys, refuses contracts from anyone who wants conquest, and has walked away from money that would have bought a fleet — because Venn’s founding rule still holds: no one who sees people as cargo. That includes, pointedly, the off-world interests who once tried to buy Niko as a weapon. Venn’s reply is crew legend, and unprintable.
What StarTeam is: a found family with a warship. Eight people (plus one defector, provisionally) who chose each other and keep choosing each other, mission after mission, winter after winter.
