Glossary
The language of Niko Raal's world — every term fictional, every definition invented for this reference.
Honesty note: Every term below belongs to a fictional universe invented for this fan reference. None of these are real.
Aurora Vigil
StarTeam’s starship — a retrofitted Halcyon long-range cruiser with ice-blue hull plating and aurora-drive engines. Home, base, and family to the crew.
Aurora-light
The visible teal-white glow vented when a frostcell user dumps excess heat. Harmless, beautiful, and tactically useful as a signal.
Bulwark
Callsign of Torg Kaen, StarTeam’s heavy assault specialist — and the origin of the verb “to bulwark,” meaning to draw enemy fire through sheer presence.
Cinder Gate
The Halcyon choke point where Niko first dueled Ember Kade (Cycle 441) and defeated his boarding party (Cycle 443).
Cryo-forms
Niko’s personal discipline of movement and breath-work that stabilizes the frostcell gift. Two hours every morning, without exception.
Cryo-Mend
Niko’s field-medicine discipline: using precise cold to stop bleeding and control fever. A bridge to real treatment, not a replacement.
Cycle
The Halcyon Sector’s standard year — one orbit of the sector’s anchor star. Dates in this reference use fictional cycle numbers.
Deep Freeze
The forbidden full-structure freeze Niko used at the Shattered Spire. Now governed by the Thaw Doctrine.
Ember Pact
The rival faction: fire-wielding raiders and ex-corporate privateers burning a path through the Halcyon trade lanes. StarTeam’s principal enemy.
Flash-freeze
Niko’s signature technique: dropping a target’s temperature to near-absolute in seconds.
Frostbite protocols
StarTeam’s cold-weather survival procedures, written mostly by Niko after Pell’s Drift.
Frostcell
The lattice-like cellular mutation that lets Niko channel thermal energy. Named for the frost-like patterns it forms under a microscope.
Frostcell children
The handful of Glacian survivors of the Long Frost who developed the mutation. Most did not survive its instability.
Frostline
Niko’s callsign — the line on a glacier where snow becomes ice, the point of no return. Also StarTeam slang for a defensive position that will not break.
Froststep
Niko’s frictionless-ice skating technique for rapid battlefield movement.
Frostweave gauntlets
Niko’s silver gauntlets, maintained by Chief Dakar. They channel, focus, and vent the frostcell gift’s heat.
Glacian
A blue-skinned human-descended people of Glacies Prime, adapted over millennia to extreme cold.
Glacies Prime
Niko’s frozen homeworld, fourth world of the Halcyon’s outer ring. Famous for its crystal cities and its never-setting aurora.
Halcyon Sector
The star sector StarTeam protects — a web of trade lanes, thawing colonies, and ice worlds.
Ice-shaping
The traditional Glacian craft of growing and working ice into structures. Niko’s mother was a master; Niko’s gift is its inward mirror.
Keth Marrow
Niko’s birth city, carved into the glacier cliffs of Glacies Prime.
Long Frost
The eleven-month stellar dimming of Cycle 426 that devastated Glacies Prime — and created the frostcell children.
Pell’s Drift
A thawing colony world where Niko performed his first large-scale freeze, stopping a flash flood.
Shatter Belt
A dense asteroid field on the Halcyon trade lanes; site of Niko’s first official StarTeam mission.
Shattered Spire
The Cycle 444 mission where Niko’s Deep Freeze saved a habitat and shattered its Spire district — his defining triumph and wound.
Sable-7
StarTeam’s intelligence android, rebuilt by Venn. Currently losing a three-year strategy game to Niko (Sable disputes this).
StarTeam
Captain Mara Venn’s multi-world crew: protectors of the Halcyon trade lanes, based aboard the Aurora Vigil.
Thaw Doctrine
StarTeam’s protocols for cryo operations near civilians, codified by Niko after the Spire. Part tactics manual, part apology.
Thawshock
Frostcell burn-out: what happens when a gift-user vents heat too slowly and their own body overheats. It put Niko in a coma for nine days.
Thermal sight
Niko’s passive ability to see heat signatures — living bodies, active machinery, hidden power sources.
Tide-caller
A Glacian ice-shaper who maintains a city’s thermal vents. Niko’s parents’ profession, and his first education in respecting the cold.
Venn’s Wager
Crew slang for any plan with a less-than-even chance that Venn approves anyway. Named for the captain’s habit of betting on her people.
