Timeline
Five story arcs, as the dojo tells them. All fan-created summaries — the app has published no official timeline; these arcs are this guide's original storytelling.
Arc 1 — The Foundling of Cinderfall
The Ember Monks find a horned child asleep on warm stone at the torii of trials. He grows up sweeping ash, learning kata, and discovering — to his masters' alarm — that leaving openings in his guard teaches him more about his opponents than any textbook. The arc ends with his naming: the novices' nickname, made official.
Arc 2 — The Wandering Year
Sent out to test the curriculum against the world, he tours the lowland gyms and returns with the story that becomes his legend: the gyms, he claims, kept melting. Whether literal or not, the arc's real event is quieter — he spars a hundred styles, loses graciously to a dozen of them, and comes home certain that the caldera is the only floor honest enough to train on.
Arc 3 — The Ashen Rival
A warrior of living ash-stone climbs to the caldera and does what no one has done: refuses every opening. For three days they circle, feint, and talk — because with him, the talking is the fighting — until the rival finally asks the question the Open Gate is designed to provoke: "What are you afraid I will see?" He answers with the Phoenix Reversal, and loses anyway, on points, grinning. They have rematched annually since. See Rivals.
Arc 4 — The Open Gate Gambit
Word of his signature spreads, and challengers arrive with a plan: don't take the opening. An entire season of challengers stand frozen, guards high, refusing the bait — and he, delighted, spends the season inventing new openings: in his schedule, his arguments, his tea-pouring. The arc's lesson, per the dojo: a fighter who will not engage has already lost the conversation.
Arc 5 — The Caldera Defense
When ash-storms threaten the Emberlight Monastery's shrines, the dojo marches — master, students, and Ember the salamander — to hold the passes. He fights not as a duelist but as a wall, banking the storm's own heat and turning it aside, and the arc ends where his story began: the whole school asleep on warm stone, the torii standing, the gate open on purpose.
