Episodes
Eight signature scenes — fan-written scene guides in the spirit of episode summaries. Each is a self-contained story; together they are the show this character would headline.
1. "The Placement Exam"
A cocky lowland champion climbs to the caldera, takes the obviously-open guard in the first ten seconds, and spends the next hour learning the difference between an opening and an invitation. Ends with the champion sweeping the dojo floor — voluntarily.
2. "Three Gyms"
The wandering-year story, told as he tells it: the smoldering mats, the catching beams, the gym that melted. A lowland master in the audience keeps trying to object. He keeps pouring her tea. The tea is excellent; the objections never quite land.
3. "The Ashen Rival"
The three-day duel told in full: two fighters circling, talking, refusing, until the question — "what are you afraid I will see?" — breaks the stalemate. He loses on points and wins the only thing he wanted: a rival worth rematching.
4. "Ember's First Winter"
The lava salamander (see Creatures) goes lethargic when the caldera cools for a week. He cancels all sparring, carries the creature everywhere in his sash like a hot-water bottle, and lectures the senior students on priorities. Nobody argues. Everybody learns.
5. "The Frozen Season"
The arc-4 gambit: a season of challengers who refuse every opening. He responds by leaving openings everywhere else — in his arguments, his schedule, his tea service — until the challengers realize they have been sparring with him for weeks without stepping onto the floor.
6. "Midnight Kata"
A novice sneaks out to watch the weekly midnight kata and sees what the style looks like at full speed, with no audience to perform restraint for. She never tells anyone what she saw. She trains twice as hard from that night on.
7. "The Wall"
The caldera defense: he holds a mountain pass against an ash-storm, not by fighting the storm but by banking it — breathing its heat in and laying it aside, the way the dojo banks its fires each night. The students hold the line behind him. The torii holds.
8. "The Rematch"
The annual bout with the Ashen Rival, fought before the whole school. This year the rival opens with his own dropped guard — the student's tribute to the teacher. He laughs out loud, mid-stance, for the first time in the series. Then he takes the opening, and the lesson begins again.
