Rivals
The fighters who make him better — which, in his school, is the highest compliment a rival can receive. All fan-created characters written for this guide.
The Ashen Rival (Kael)
A warrior of living ash-stone from the Ashen Steps dojo, and the only fighter to ever refuse every opening for three full days (see Timeline: Arc 3). Kael fights like a landslide thinks: slow, total, and impossible to argue with. Their annual rematch is the caldera's biggest event. He insists Kael is his best friend. Kael insists they are rivals. Both statements are true; this is the whole of their relationship.
The Cold Iron Duelist
A lowland champion who fights with a blade of cold iron and a perfect, passionless guard — the stylistic opposite of everything the lava arena teaches. She does not banter, does not react to provocations, and treats his dropped-guard invitations as simply bad defense. He finds her fascinating and infuriating in equal measure, which she pretends not to notice.
The Wildfire Brawler
An unnamed fire-wielder from the deep wilds who treats flame as pure emotion — the living counter-argument to his discipline. Their exhibition bout is the dojo's favorite teaching tape: ten minutes of beautiful chaos, ending the moment he stops performing restraint and simply outlasts the burn. "Fire is not a feeling," he tells the students afterward. "It is a curriculum. Watch the tape again."
Himself, at fourteen
Ask him who his hardest opponent was and he will not name a rival — he will name the novice he used to be: the foundling who left openings by accident, who burned bright to be noticed, who had not yet learned that the gate is a question, not a mistake. He spars that kid every morning in the mirror of the lava channel. The kid is getting better. So is he.
