Who this is about
Elon Reeve Musk, born June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, is an engineer and business magnate. He co-founded PayPal’s predecessor X.com, founded SpaceX (2002), joined Tesla as an early investor and chairman (2004, CEO from 2008), founded or co-founded Neuralink (2016), The Boring Company (2016), OpenAI (2015, left its board in 2018), and xAI (2023), and acquired Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, renaming it X.
He is routinely ranked among the world’s wealthiest people — a figure that moves constantly with Tesla and SpaceX valuations, so we don’t print a single number here (see controversies for how wealth estimates work).
Why he matters
Three claims about him are largely undisputed, even among critics:
- SpaceX changed orbital spaceflight economics. Reusable Falcon 9 first stages turned rocket launches from disposable to repeatable. SpaceX became the world’s most active launch provider and the backbone of the ISS crew program under NASA contracts.
- Tesla changed the auto industry’s trajectory. The Model S, Model 3, and Model Y made battery-electric vehicles mass-market products, forcing every major automaker to electrify.
- Starlink changed global connectivity. With thousands of satellites, it became the largest satellite constellation ever flown, providing broadband where terrestrial networks don’t reach.
Everything else — the tone, the tweets, the politics, the timelines — is where the arguments start. This site separates the two.
How to use this site
- Want the arc? Biography, then Timeline.
- Want the companies? Companies, then the deep dives on reusable rockets, EVs, Starlink, and Mars plans.
- Want his own words? Sayings — verbatim, cited.
- Want the disputed claims? Mythology vs. Record and Controversies present both sides neutrally.
The honesty rules
- Quotes are verbatim and cited. If he didn’t say it, it goes in the misattributed section.
- Dates come from evidence. Filings, announcements, court records, published interviews.
- Disputed claims are flagged. The emerald mine, the Tesla “founder” title, Starlink in wartime Ukraine — competing accounts are presented, not settled by us.
- Living-person rules. No partisan framing, no endorsement, no attack. Actions are described; motives are left to the reader.
