The Founding of Nightglass

Three people, a leased warehouse, and a manifesto titled "Clarity Is a Moral Position." The fictional origin, told in full.

Fictional company Fictional history

The glass terminal (fictional, 1996)

Before the company, the object: a CRT stripped of its casing, mounted behind smoked glass so the user could watch the electrons work. The fiction is unsparing about its commercial fate — two years of trade shows, zero orders — and Wren, in character, is unsparing about what it taught him: “Nobody buys honesty. They buy what honesty lets them pretend.”

The repossession (fictional, 2001)

The workshop is repossessed. In the dossier’s telling this is the hinge of the whole fiction: Wren stops trying to sell the glass as an object and starts selling what the glass means. The in-character epitaph: “The best performance review I ever received.” The dossier notes the line is too good to be spontaneous and too useful to be false — inside the fiction, it doesn’t matter which.

The manifesto (fictional, 2003)

“Clarity Is a Moral Position” — eleven pages, in the fiction, printed on the back of repossession notices. Its argument: every interface is a moral claim about what the user deserves to see; most interfaces lie by omission; Nightglass will build the ones that don’t. The three fictional co-founders sign it; the fiction says two of them later called it “the most expensive thing we ever signed.”

The warehouse (fictional, 2003–2008)

Five years of obscurity the fiction barely documents — deliberately, the dossier suggests, because legends need their blank years. What survives in the fictional record: the Pane prototypes, the first decommissioning (a product so obscure the fiction forgot its name), and the hiring of the fictional Mara Voss, who looked at the manifesto and said, in the fiction: “Fine. But we’re putting numbers on the clarity.”
