Glossary

The vocabulary of the fiction — every term invented for the dossier, defined in the character's world.

Fictional company Fictional lexicon

Clarity

The highest virtue in the fictional Doctrine; the standard against which everything is measured and most things fail. “Clarity over comfort.”

Decommission

To end — a product, a career, a department — cleanly, finally, and without euphemism. “I don’t break things. I decommission them.” (Wren, fictional.)

Glasshouse

The fictional Nightglass headquarters: a campus built almost entirely of the company’s own smart glass. See the deep dive.

Lumen

The fictional spatial overlay (2020): information rendered onto the world through Nightglass panes.

Nightglass

The fictional company; also, in the fiction’s slang, the material itself — “a wall of nightglass” — and the worldview: “he sees everything through nightglass.”

Obsidian Keynote

The fictional 2011 keynote that made Wren a fictional household name. Ninety minutes, no applause breaks. See the deep dive.

Obsidian Vault

The fictional zero-trust data custody platform (2017). See the security deep dive.

Pane

(n.) The fictional operating layer (2008); (v.) to organize into cross-functional teams — “we paned the launch team.”

Panes (teams)

The fictional cross-functional teams, named for glass types: Annealed, Tempered, Laminated.

The card

The character card description — “The magnetic yet merciless founder of Nightglass Systems” — quoted verbatim; the one pre-existing public fact about the character.

The chair

The permanently vacant executive seat at Nightglass, in the fiction: “a standard with a chair around it.”

The Doctrine

The fictional seven-tenet operating philosophy. See philosophy and the deep dive.

The gram

From the in-character line “Transparency is a product. We sell it by the gram” — the fiction’s unit of metered honesty.

The standard

Whatever Wren says it is. “It no longer meets the standard of clarity.” Tenet 7.

The whisper protocol

Fictional slang for the Obsidian Keynote’s closing claim — “The glass remembers everything. I just taught it to whisper” — used in the fiction to mean ambient, deniable corporate memory.

Tint

Anything that softens a hard truth: comfort, kindness, euphemism. “Comfort is a tint. We do not tint.”
