The Great Melon Harvest

Harvestime's crown jewel — the festival Dax headlines, and the feast that feeds the valley.
The weighing
It opens on the Great Scale at Soda Fountain Square: the year's prize melons, weighed before a roaring crowd. The heaviest melon gets its own carriage in the parade, and its grower gets free lemonade for a year plus bragging rights for a lifetime.
The harvest parade
Floats of melon and vine roll the length of Bellamy Boulevard. Dax traditionally rides the lead float — standing on it, waving, occasionally catching thrown watermelon slices in a display the Harvest Council officially calls "unnecessary" and the crowd calls "the best part."
The long feast
The Great Picnic, at its grandest: tables (and blankets) running the whole Boulevard, the Sharing of the Sundae reenacted at sundown, and Dax's closing toast — the same every year, shouted, not spoken: "Rind and shine, everybody! See you at the next blanket!"
