The Vault of Whispering Stone

Expedition III — a tomb that hums beneath the dunes, and a choice about what stays buried.

The whisper-moths gave it away. They gathered over a stretch of the Sunscarred Dunes in numbers Sister Ilya had only read about — which meant whisperstone, and a lot of it, underground. Ground-penetrating soundings (Bram’s new favorite toy) showed chambers. Big ones.

The crew dug for six weeks in killing heat. On the forty-third day, the shaft broke through — and the vault sang. Wind moving through whisperstone flutes carved into the walls made a low chord that raised the hair on everyone’s arms. Rook cried. Bram pretended not to. Cassia sketched for an hour without speaking, which the crew later agreed was the most frightened they’d ever seen her.

Inside lay the dead of a forgotten dynasty — and, on the central bier, a Humming Shard of whisperstone that pulsed like a slow heart. It was the most valuable single object Cassia had ever found. Private buyers would have paid a fleet for it. Dash Corvane, arriving (inevitably) late, offered to split it on the spot.

Cassia left it where it lay.

“Some things are buried on purpose,” she wrote that night. “The finders’ law says history belongs to everyone. The dead don’t get a vote, so I vote for them: this one stays.” She sealed the shaft, marked it on no public chart, and told the story — all of it — in her journal. The expedition’s only treasure was the map of where not to dig. Imogen Pell framed the page.

“Gold tarnishes. Stories don’t. That’s why I dig for the second one.”
