“Northstar” — her father’s brass compass
Cartographer Tomas Gold’s compass, engraved with a compass rose and his initials. Cassia taps it twice for luck before entering anywhere dark. It has never once pointed her wrong — though Bram notes it has pointed her interesting several times.
The field journals
Forty-one volumes and counting, every artifact sketched before it’s touched. Volume One opens with a twelve-year-old’s shaky copy of her father’s last half-finished page.
Torch, grapnel line (“Gerald”), and satchel
Standard expedition kit, non-standard attachment. Every rope gets a name; Gerald the grapnel has saved her life twice and heard about it both times.
