The Clockwork Sanctum

Expedition II — a ticking vault inside a mountain, and a race with Dash Corvane.

High in the Frostreach, shepherds spoke of a mountain that ticked. Sister Ilya found the reference in a four-hundred-year-old maintenance log — somebody had been winding something, on a schedule, for centuries.

Cassia’s crew climbed for nine days. Dash Corvane’s crew climbed for eight — he’d bribed the same shepherds. The race ended at a gear-toothed door set into the mountainside, where both parties arrived at dusk, out of breath, and equally unwilling to open it in the dark. They camped twenty paces apart. Rook stole Dash’s dessert. Diplomacy was not achieved.

At dawn Cassia’s team went in first — by the ancient and binding rule of “we got here with better snacks.” Inside: a sanctum of brass gears the size of houses, still turning, still wound by — nothing. No keeper, no mechanism anyone could find. Just a thousand years of patient ticking, and at the center, a single Ticking Key on a stone plinth, warm to the touch.

Cassia took the key, sketched everything, and left the gears turning. “Some doors,” she wrote, “are the treasure. You don’t take the door.” Dash took rubbings and a sulk. The key still ticks in the Meridian Museum vault, where the curators have given up explaining it to visitors.
