Tongue of Light
“And… gotcha.” The story of the fastest tongue in the canopy and the victory it gave away.
The technique
The tongue-catch looks instantaneous, but Camaleo insists it has three movements: notice (the eyes swivel), decide (the crest lifts), and gotcha (self-explanatory). It learned the form from watching the river catch the sky every morning — “the river never misses,” Camaleo says, “because the river never hurries.”
The championship
Entered as a joke. Won by a single firefly. The crowd went wild — or as wild as a crowd gets at firefly pace, which is to say, warmly luminous. Camaleo released the winning catch immediately: “on account of it being Pip’s cousin.” Pip denies the relation and glows with pride anyway.
The narration
Camaleo narrates every catch, always the same way: “and… gotcha.” Asked why, it says the tongue likes an audience. The tongue has never confirmed this. The fireflies have stopped asking.
