Every mission gets an after-action: what the ping cost, what the Wards learned. Three years in, the compiled debrief reads like a love letter the city wrote without meaning to.
What the pings cost
- One actuator — blown on the Overpass lift, rebuilt by Wrench.
- Nineteen hours — the longest shift, the worst surge in a decade.
- Countless quiet nights — given to patrol instead of rest.
- One question, unanswered — who's inside. The Wards stopped asking.
What the Wards learned
- Ping early. The water decides; the armor moves faster when it knows sooner.
- Mark the work. Chalk stars map every rescue — the city's own record.
- Photograph the stars, not the suit. The armor finishes and leaves before the press. Respect it.
- The helmet stays on. Not a mystery to solve — a boundary to honor.
CIVILIAN CLEAR. ARMOR CLEAR. PING CLOSED.
And the record stands: 412 pings answered, zero missed. Tonight's patrol leaves at dusk — canal road, underpass, pier, nursery block, floodline. Same order. Same pace. The chalk is fresh, the beacons are charged, and somewhere in the Wards, a kid is counting stars on green plating, waiting for the boots.
