Rivals & Team-Ups
Every smooth operator needs a foil.
The rival: White Bread Wally
White Bread Wally runs the Soft Crust Lounge directly across the street from the Golden Grain Club. Where Willie is golden-brown and whole-wheat, Wally is — by his own tragic admission — "enriched." Where Willie swings, Wally sways (badly). Where Willie instigates joy, Wally instigates paperwork: noise complaints, permit challenges, strongly worded letters.
And yet. The rivalry is the city's favorite spectator sport precisely because it's never mean. Wally's complaints are always technically valid and always hilariously timed. Willie's responses are always gracious and always devastating. Their annual Dance-Off Accords (see Festivals) draw the whole Quarter, and Wally's nine-year losing streak is a point of civic pride for everyone, possibly including Wally.
"Some rivals you defeat," Willie says. "Wally I just outlast — smoothly."
Team-up: Willie & Dash — "The Midnight Run"
When the club's headliner act got stranded across town minutes before showtime, Willie called the fastest stick in Al Dente. Dash crossed the city in eleven minutes — through the Fusilli Flats spiral, over the Docks bridge, against the light cycle — and the show went on. The episode is told in Episodes; the friendship is permanent. Dash eats free at the club forever. (He eats fast, though. It's his whole thing.)
Team-up: Willie & Rasta Pasta — Boil & Bass
Every summer, the jazz MC and the beach MC close the Boil & Bass Festival together: one stage, two traditions, zero rehearsal, total magic. Their closing sets are improvised, unrepeatable, and — per city ordinance — never recorded, "so the legend stays seasoned."
The philosophy
Willie on rivals: "A rival is just a friend who hasn't lost to you graciously yet." Willie on team-ups: "Find people faster, funnier, or cooler than you — then stand next to them and take notes."
