Friends & Neighbors
Nobody swings alone.
The Golden Grain house band — the Al Dente All-Stars
- Marinara Mae (penne) — vocalist. A voice like Sunday sauce: rich, warm, impossible to rush. Willie discovered her singing to an empty room and filled it within the week.
- Linguini Lou (linguine) — saxophone. Long, loose, and lyrical; argues constantly with the trumpet player about everything and nothing.
- Gnocchi G (gnocchi) — drums. Small, round, and the loudest thing in the building. Settles all disputes with a drum fill.
- Farfalle Fay (farfalle) — piano. Bow-tie shaped, bow-tie sharp; the only person who can out-quip Willie, and she knows it.
The Harlem Quarter
- Al Dente Al (rigatoni) — the club's bouncer and Willie's oldest friend in the city. Immense, gentle, and the reason the house rule about fights has never once been tested.
- Sunday Gravy Sue (conchiglie) — runs the soul-food kitchen next door; supplies the club's late-night menu and Willie's willpower (he's not allowed in her kitchen during service).
- Bucatini Blue (bucatini) — the neighborhood's one-man welcome committee and chief gossip; knows everything, tells almost nothing.
Fellow Macaronis stars
- Dash — the breadstick delivery runner. Delivers the club's emergency supplies at impossible speed; Willie pays in applause and gravy. Their team-up episode ("The Midnight Run") is a fan favorite.
- Rasta Pasta — the penne rapper of Jerkwater Beach. Rival on the festival stages, brother everywhere else. Their annual Boil & Bass closing set is the city's favorite tradition.
How Willie treats people
Willie collects people the way other people collect records — carefully, joyfully, and with strong opinions about each one. His gift, friends say, is making everyone feel like the most interesting person in the room, right up until he walks in and everyone forgets why they were talking.
