Scene Guide: The Lost Recipe
Inside the map room of Pastalia's happiest treasure hunter.
The setup
Uncle Penne's wagon, interior. Every surface is pinned with maps — some bought, some drawn, some that appear to be menus with "X" marks added in crayon. A brass compass hangs by the door. It spins when the wagon rocks, which Penne insists is "the recipe calling."
How the scene plays
Beat 1 — The clue: Penne shows Ricky the water-stained bookstall page: "where the compass spins and the sauce sings." Ricky: "That's... not a location." Penne: "That's what makes it an adventure."
Beat 2 — The plan: A montage of preparations — packing three lunches for a two-hour trip, arguing with the compass, getting directions from Nonna ("Go left at the big rock, you impossible man").
Beat 3 — The expedition: They search a hillside cellar, find only excellent cheese, and declare the day "a reconnaissance triumph." Ricky is thrilled. The cheese is genuinely excellent.
Beat 4 — The button: Back at the wagon, Penne pins the cheese wrapper to the map. "Evidence," he says solemnly. "The recipe is near." Somewhere, Nonna sighs the sigh of a woman who has heard this before.
