Macaronis Glossary
Talk like a local. Sway like the beach.
Al dente
adjective. The ideal state of being: firm, ready, never mushy. Also the capital city. "Stay al dente out there."
Bless up
phrase. Rasta's greeting and farewell; always meant.
The Cookout
proper noun. The beach-wide cookout: everyone brings a plate, nobody brings a plan. Structural, not optional.
Dough
noun. Currency. Rasta is paid partly in dough, partly in fish, mostly in good vibes.
Dub
noun. The echo-heavy remix art; Dubwise Dan's domain.
Extrusion
noun. Birth, for pasta people. Rasta was extruded beachside, obviously.
The Great Boil
proper noun. The creation myth: eight minutes that made the world. Rasta: "The universe cooked slow. Respect the recipe."
Irie
adjective. Good, right, at peace — Rasta's whole operating system in one word.
Island time
noun. The only time zone that matters on the beach. Hurrying is just worrying at speed.
Jerkwater Beach
proper noun. Rasta's home turf: boardwalk, sound systems, bonfires, the city's collective exhale.
The Jerkwater Sound
proper noun. Rasta's rig: cruise-ship speakers, an ancient amp, a mixer with opinions.
One love, one riddim
phrase. The motto. The philosophy. The set-closer.
Riddim
noun. The beat, the groove. "One riddim" means everyone's moving together.
The Second Simmer
noun. The parade tradition: when something wonderful happens, a brass-led parade forms behind it. Rasta turns them into moving sound systems.
Soggy
adjective. The worst thing a pasta person can be. Rasta's gentler take: "We've all been soggy. Dry off, tune up, play on."
Sound clash
noun. Rival sound systems, winner takes the night. Rasta's record: unblemished (Static disputes this; the beach does not).
