The beach is a family. These are the cousins.
The beach band
- Steel Drum Sal (conchiglie) — steelpan. Her pans catch the sunlight and throw it across the crowd; Rasta calls her "the lighthouse."
- Bassline Bea (bucatini) — bass. Hollow, deep, and the foundation of everything. "Bea plays the notes the earth hums," Rasta says.
- Dubwise Dan (farfalle) — DJ and dub mixer. Bow-tie shaped, bow-tie precise; the only person Rasta trusts with the sacred rule when he steps away.
- Skankin' Shelly (orzo) — tiny, mighty, lead dancer. The crowd follows Shelly; Shelly follows the riddim.
The boardwalk
- Fisherman Fred (linguine) — the old fisherman who taught Rasta the tide schedule. His boat is named Irie.
- Vinyl Vera (lasagna sheet) — runs the record shop; Rasta's supplier, archivist, and fiercest debater about pressings.
- Grandma's Memory — Rasta's grandmother, the tam-knitter, gone but everywhere: in the colors, the calm, and the third version of the story.
Fellow Macaronis stars
- Whole Wheat Willie — the jazz MC. Rival on the festival stages, brother everywhere else. Their Boil & Bass closing sets are the city's favorite tradition. "Willie smooth, Rasta slow," Rasta says. "Together: perfect."
- Dash — the delivery runner. Runs Rasta's festival supply chain at impossible speed; Rasta repays him in the chillest hangout in the city. "Dash bring the speed, I bring the slow. Together we bring the party."
How Rasta treats people
Rasta treats everyone like family at a cookout: feed them, seat them near the music, and make sure they leave happier than they came. His gift is the slow nod that says I see you — and the beach, all of it, nodding back.
