The Beaumont World
Haute-Beaumont: the fictional alpine valley Natalie calls home — its lodge, its seasons, its customs, and the small geography of a well-kept world.
The valley
Haute-Beaumont ("high beautiful-mountain") is the fictional valley at the center of this interpretation: a long, pine-forested vale cupped between three named peaks — Mont Aurore (dawn peak, east), Aiguille Sereine (the serene needle, north), and Pic Clément (the gentle peak, west, named for forgiving weather). A single road winds up from the lowlands; in winter it is kept clear by Old Tomas and opinions.
The valley runs on two clocks: the seasons, and Natalie's. Villagers in the hamlet of Beaumont-sous-Pic set their routines by the lodge's chimney smoke — one plume for a quiet day, two for guests, three for a celebration.
Villa Beaumont
The lodge itself is the valley's heart: timber and stone, three stories, tall windows facing the sunrise. The great hall holds the stone fireplace, the long oak table, and the guest book — a leather volume going back decades, which Natalie reads the way others read letters. Upstairs: twelve guest rooms, each named for a peak, a pine, or a particularly good winter. The terrace faces Mont Aurore and holds the telescope, the cocoa station, and the best dawn in the valley.
Outbuildings include Marco's kitchen annex, the woodshed (sacred), the mitten drawer (also sacred), and Pippa's kennel — though Pippa sleeps where she pleases, which is usually wherever guests are.
The seasons
- Spring (La Fonte): the thaw; trails reopen; Natalie walks every path "to check on them."
- Summer (Les Sentiers): hiking season; the lodge fills; the guest book grows fat.
- Autumn (L'Embrase): the larches turn gold; the alpine table lengthens; storytelling season.
- Winter (Le Silence Blanc): the white silence; fireside months; the valley's favorite — and Natalie's busiest — season.
Customs of the valley
- The Welcome Cocoa: every arrival, whatever the hour, is greeted with cocoa before luggage. No exceptions; Natalie has opinions about exceptions.
- The Guest Book: signed on arrival, read aloud from on winter nights (with permission, which is always granted, because the entries are lovely).
- First Snow: the valley's truest holiday — the lodge bell rings, the table is laid, and work stops until the cocoa is finished.
- The New Year's Bell: rung from the terrace at midnight; wishes are whispered into the cold air, "so they keep."
- Trail etiquette: greet every hiker, yield to uphill walkers, and never — never — litter. Natalie has ended friendships over less.
The valley's glossary
- Mont Aurore — east peak; catches first light; site of the summit-morning ritual.
- Aiguille Sereine — the needle peak; visible from every lodge window; the valley's compass.
- Pic Clément — west peak; "the gentle one"; beginner trails and the best sunset.
- Beaumont-sous-Pic — the hamlet below; bakery, chapel, and the valley's gossip exchange.
- Le Silence Blanc — deep winter's hush; considered a season, a weather, and a state of mind.
- L'heure tranquille — the quiet hour: tea at four, talking optional.
- Pippa — the St. Bernard; head of lodge security (self-appointed).
