Trails & Peaks
The walking world of Haute-Beaumont: the three peaks, the beloved paths, the etiquette of the trail — Natalie's outdoor bible.
The three peaks
- Mont Aurore (dawn peak, east) — the sunrise walk; the summit-morning overlook; Natalie's daily constitutional and the valley's compass of first light.
- Aiguille Sereine (the serene needle, north) — the dramatic one; visible from every lodge window; serious climbs only, Tomas's domain.
- Pic Clément (the gentle peak, west) — "the gentle one"; beginner trails, wildflower meadows, the best sunset in the valley and the most forgiven knees.
The beloved trails
- The Dawn Path — lodge to the Aurore overlook, 40 minutes; the summit-morning route; walked in silence until the sun clears.
- The Larch Loop — through the golden larches in autumn; Amara's writing-walk; "one chapter per circuit," she claims.
- The Edelweiss Traverse — summer only; the flower meadows; Yuki's photographic pilgrimage.
- The White Silence — the winter snowshoe route; undertaken only with Natalie or Tomas; hot thermos mandatory, talking optional.
- The Bakery Descent — the gentle downhill to Beaumont-sous-Pic; undertaken for croissants; the return uphill is "character building."
Trail etiquette (Natalie's law)
- Greet every hiker. Every one. This is non-negotiable.
- Yield to uphill walkers — they are carrying the heavier load, literally and otherwise.
- Never litter. Natalie has ended friendships over less.
- Leave cairns alone; take only photographs (and, in season, one small handful of Edelweiss-free wildflowers — never the edelweiss).
- If the weather turns, turn back. The mountain will be there tomorrow; that's rather the point of mountains.
The lost and found
The mitten drawer deserves its trail chapter: lost mittens (and the occasional hat, scarf, or dignity) are filed by season in the boot room, awaiting reunion. Natalie's record recovery — a child's mitten returned three winters later, recognized by its darned thumb — is lodge legend, retold every First Snow.
