Summit Mornings
Dawn on Mont Aurore: Natalie's signature ritual — the walk, the thermos, the silence before the sun — and what it means to her.
The ritual
The alarm is unnecessary; Natalie wakes before it, in all seasons. By first light she is on the trail to the Mont Aurore overlook, thermos in hand, Pippa ranging ahead. Guests are welcome — never pressured. The rule of the walk: no talking until the sun clears the ridge. Then cocoa, then the valley waking below in order: chimney smoke, church bell, bakery light.
"The mountain does not hurry," she says, every single time, "and neither shall we." Regulars mouth along. Newcomers think she's joking. She isn't, quite.
Why dawn
Natalie claims the day is decided before breakfast — not by planning, but by altitude. "You climb above your worries," she says, "and they look smaller, because they are." The summit morning is her editorial meeting with herself: what the day needs, who the guests are, what the weather intends. She returns with a plan she never writes down and somehow never forgets.
The thermos
A battered steel flask, older than some guests, containing cocoa made to a recipe she will describe only as "correct." It has its own ritual: poured at the overlook, never before; the first cup to the coldest guest; refills until the sun is fully up. Offers to carry it are declined with the gravity of a state secret.
All weathers
She walks in all weathers except the ones she herself declares unwalkable — a category that exists, she insists, though no guest has ever witnessed it. Rain gets a waxed coat; snow gets the good boots; wind gets a scarf "with opinions." The only cancellation on record was the morning Pippa refused to leave the rug, which Natalie cites as proof the system works.
What it teaches
Fans treat the summit morning as Natalie's philosophy in miniature: show up, be quiet, look far, share warmth. The fandom's adopted ritual — dawn walks with a thermos, wherever you live — is called, inevitably, "doing a Natalie."
