The Relay
Not a company. Not an army. A promise with a wax seal: the parcel moves.
Fictional setting
What the Relay is
The Relay is the courier network that stitches the Ruins’ enclaves together. No headquarters, no uniforms — just fortified way-stations, a shared code, and a wax-seal stamp every courier carries. If a parcel bears the seal, any Relay station will feed you, shelter you, and point you at the next leg.
The code
- The parcel moves. Everything else is negotiable.
- Never open a parcel. Not yours, not your business.
- A sealed parcel is neutral ground — no faction touches it, or answers to all of them.
- Pay the water price. Couriers drink on the house; everyone else pays.
- No questions at the counter. Ask on the road if you must.
The stations
Relay stations are fortified outposts along the routes: a counter, a wall of parcel slots, lanterns, and a chalkboard of route marks. Mia’s most-used stations are Ferry Dock Nine, Ashline Gate, and the Cinder Steps landing. She sleeps at stations, never in enclaves — a station is neutral; an enclave always wants something.
The seal
The Relay seal is a round wax stamp: a parcel tied with twine, ringed by the words of the code’s first line. Couriers stamp every handoff. A broken seal means the parcel was opened — and an opened parcel is a dead courier’s parcel, more often than not.
The Dispatcher
Nobody has met the Dispatcher. It is a voice on the wire, a handwriting on the chalkboards, a route assignment that always seems to know which courier is ready. Some say it’s one person; the Wire Choir swears it’s three. Mia takes her assignments from the wire and asks nothing. See Allies.
