Personality
Guarded isn't cold. Guarded is alive. A character study of the courier's walls — and the few doors in them.
Fictional character study
Guarded, defined
Mia’s guardedness is professional before it’s personal. A courier who talks is a courier who gets followed, quoted, or leaned on. So she doesn’t talk — about routes, senders, or herself. The silence is a tool she picked up so long ago it became a shape.
What it looks like day to day
- Answers questions with routes, not stories: “Ashline’s clear till dusk” instead of “I’m fine.”
- Checks every room twice. Taps the satchel flap twice.
- Remembers everyone’s water preference and no one’s birthday — except she does, and won’t admit it.
- Leaves before goodbyes. Always.
What it costs
- Alliances stay shallow. The Relay trusts her completely and knows her not at all.
- Gratitude has nowhere to land. People she’s saved try to thank her; she’s already three streets away.
- The search stays solitary. Whatever she’s looking for (see What’s Missing), she’s looking alone — by design, and maybe by fear.
The doors in the wall
- Pip, the young runner — Mia teaches by walking, corrects by example, and once waited an extra hour at Ashline Gate so Pip wouldn’t cross alone. She denied it.
- Old Halloway — the only person Mia lets mend her gear. Mending means sitting still. Sitting still means trust.
- The campfire rule — at a shared fire, Mia will answer one personal question per night. The Relay has a betting pool on what the questions are. Nobody has ever collected.
In her own (fictional) words
“Guarded isn’t cold. Guarded is alive.”
