Money, Honestly
Let's talk about money the way it deserves: plainly, without screenshots, and without fairy tales.
The site’s money policy
This site contains zero income claims. No screenshots, no “I made $X last month,” no revenue stories — not even from Ivy, because she’s fictional and any number would be invented. This is deliberate. Income screenshots are the most manipulated genre of creator content: survivorship bias, undisclosed ad spend, revenue vs. profit confusion, and outright fabrication. A site about honest confidence can’t traffic in them.
What it actually costs to start
The honest startup budget: $0–50. Your phone, free editing apps, window light. Everything beyond that is optional until revenue exists. The creators who fail financially usually fail the same way: spending like they’re already successful — courses, gear, ads — before any income arrives. Keep costs near zero until the work proves itself.
Revenue vs. profit (the confusion that sells courses)
“$10K month!” means nothing without costs. Ad spend, editor fees, equipment, platform cuts, taxes — a creator “making” $10K in revenue might keep $3K. When anyone flashes a revenue number without costs, they’re showing you the trailer, not the movie. Always ask: revenue or profit?
The timeline nobody advertises
Realistic, unglamorous, common: months of $0, then small irregular income (a $50 affiliate payout, a $200 sponsor), then — for a persistent minority — part-time-level income in year 2–3, with full-time income rarer and slower. There are faster stories; they’re outliers, and outliers make bad plans. Plan for slow, budget for zero, and let anything faster be a pleasant surprise.
Taxes and the boring essentials
Money you earn creating is income — set aside a percentage for taxes from the first dollar, keep basic records of income and expenses, and learn your country’s rules for self-employment before you need them. Unsexy, non-optional. This isn’t financial advice; it’s “don’t learn about estimated taxes from a penalty notice” advice.
The real financial goal
Not a number — optionality. Multiple small income streams, low fixed costs, no debt funding the dream. A creator making modest money from three sources with no debt is financially healthier than a viral creator with one sponsor and a maxed card. Ivy’s money mantra: “Rich is a feeling; solvent is a fact. Chase the fact.” (Original persona line — see Ivy Says.)
