Glossary

The words, minus the jargon. Every term a confident creator should actually understand.

Algorithm

The recommendation system that decides what each viewer sees. Optimizes for predicted watch time and satisfaction; not a person, not a conspiracy. See How Algorithms Work.

Authenticity

Presenting honestly — never claiming feelings, results, or opinions you don’t have. Not the same as sharing everything. See Selfie-Mode Presence.

Batching

Filming or editing multiple pieces of content in one session to cut per-video setup overhead. See The Content Calendar.

Brand deal (sponsorship)

A paid arrangement where a creator features a product. Requires written terms and clear disclosure. See Brand Deals, Honestly.

Burnout

Exhaustion from unsustainable creating — especially performing energy you don’t have for metrics that don’t love you back. See Comparison & Burnout.

Call to action (CTA)

The thing you ask the viewer to do: comment, follow, click. Honest CTAs ask for real engagement; manipulative ones manufacture it.

Clickbait

A hook that promises what the content doesn’t deliver. Breaks the viewer contract; trains audiences not to trust you. See Captions & Hooks.

Content pillar

One of the 2–4 recurring topics a creator rotates between, keeping content focused and plannable. See The Content Calendar.

Creator economy

The system where individuals earn from content and audience: ads, sponsorships, subscriptions, products, affiliates. See The Creator Economy.

Disclosure

Stating a paid or gifted relationship clearly in the content itself. Legally required in most countries; trust-required everywhere. See Brand Deals, Honestly.

Engagement bait

Tactics that coerce interaction (“comment YES or else”). Platforms demote it; audiences resent it. Not taught here.

Evergreen content

Content that stays relevant for months or years (tutorials, explainers) — the opposite of trend-chasing. Compounds over time.

Hook

The opening seconds/lines that earn continued attention. A good hook is a kept promise. See Captions & Hooks.

Monetization

Turning attention into income via any revenue stream. Honest monetization never fakes the numbers behind it. See Money, Honestly.

Niche

The specific audience + topic a creator serves. Clarity of niche helps both algorithms and humans find you.

Parasocial relationship

A one-sided sense of intimacy a viewer feels toward a creator. Normal at low levels; requires boundary management as you grow. See Boundaries & Safety.

Retention

The percentage of a video viewers actually watch. The heavyweight signal in most recommendation systems. See How Algorithms Work.

Ring light

A circular LED light placed around/behind the camera for soft, even facial lighting. The visual signature of selfie-mode creating.

Self-efficacy

Psychology’s term for belief in your ability to handle things — the technical name for what Ivy calls confidence. Built through mastery experiences (reps).

Shadowban (myth)

The folk theory that platforms secretly suppress accounts. Usually misdiagnosed underperformance; real suppression follows policy violations. See How Algorithms Work.

Short-form video

Vertical video under ~3 minutes (TikTok, Reels, Shorts). Fast growth, fast decay. See Platforms, Explained.

Survivorship bias

The error of learning from winners only — the visible successes — while the far more numerous failures stay invisible. The reason income screenshots mislead. See Money, Honestly.

Watch time

Total minutes viewers spend on content. The core currency platforms optimize for.
