The five-minute morning routine
Five moves, five minutes, one better morning.
Why five minutes works
Emma’s rule: a routine you skip is decoration. Five minutes is too short to fail, which is exactly why it works. Do it before you touch your phone.
The routine
Minute 1 — Water. Drink a full glass of water. Your body just went eight hours without any; coffee can wait sixty seconds.
Minute 2 — Sunlight. Open the curtains or step outside. Morning light tells your brain the day has started. No light therapy claims here — it just feels good.
Minute 3 — Stretch. Reach for the ceiling, touch your toes, roll your shoulders. Wake up the parts that slept in weird positions.
Minute 4 — One tidy thing. Make the bed, or clear the nightstand, or hang up yesterday’s clothes. One visible win sets the tone.
Minute 5 — One intention. Say it out loud or write it down: “Today I will ___.” Keep it tiny. “Today I will drink water before my second coffee” is a perfect intention.
Make it yours
- Night owl? Do a five-minute evening version instead: tidy one thing, lay out tomorrow’s clothes, write one intention for morning-you.
- Kids, pets, chaos? The routine scales down to two minutes: water + intention. Still counts.
- Missed a day? The routine doesn’t keep score. Start again tomorrow. Or at lunch. Days restart whenever you say so — see the reset ritual.
What Emma would say
“You don’t need a 5 a.m. club membership. You need water, light, and one made bed. Glow-up achieved.” — Emma Lane (fictional persona; quote written for this site)
