Ranks & Protocol
Who salutes whom, how dawn watch changes, and why the beacon chain is sacred.
Lore companion
A fortress that floats still needs its feet on the ground, procedurally speaking. These are the ranks and protocols of the Commander’s sky fortress — companion lore for the fictional persona.
The ranks
| Rank | Holds |
|---|---|
| Commander | The fortress, the fleet, the final word. One only. |
| Warden | Her hand-picked officers. More. |
| Wing Captain | Commands a patrol wing or a capital ship. |
| Beacon Keeper | Tends the beacon chains; outranks everyone on a dark night. |
| Chart Officer | Keeps the observatory’s maps true. |
| Deck Crew | The hands that hold the fortress together. |
Rank is worn on the cuff in silver stars — one for crew, up to the Commander’s own constellation clasp. (See the cosplay guide for the insignia in detail.)
Protocol
- Dawn watch changes on the observation deck, facing the sunrise. The off-going watch reports; the on-coming watch repeats it back. Nothing is assumed.
- The Warden’s oath is spoken once, at dawn, administered by the Commander herself: “The sky is wide, the watch is long, and the board is never still. I hold my post.”
- Reports go up; orders come down. Skip a level in either direction and you will be explaining yourself to the Commander, which is an experience people describe exactly once.
- A dark beacon is an emergency. Whoever sees it first owns it until a tender arrives. The beacon chain is sacred — see The fleet.
The small things
She takes her tea on the observation deck at dusk. The Wardens’ table in the mess is the one with the view. New crew are told three things on day one: learn the lanes, respect the chain, and never — never — touch the star-globe in the war room.
