Glossary

The fortress lexicon — speak it correctly, or be corrected.

Lore companion

Terms of the Commander’s world. All definitions are companion lore for the fictional persona.

Beacon chain — The line of lit beacons marking a trade lane. Sacred; a dark beacon is an emergency. See The fleet.

Beacon Keeper — The officer who tends the beacon chains. Outranks everyone on a dark night.

The blank edges — The uninked borders of the star charts; the unknown, and the Commander’s favorite thing to study.

The board — The whole situation: fortress, fleet, frontier, weather, people. “The board is never still.”

Chart Officer — Keeper of the observatory’s maps.

Chessboard doctrine — Her philosophy: see the whole board, think three moves ahead, apologize never. See The chessboard doctrine.

Dawn watch — The changing of the watch at sunrise on the observation deck. Nothing is assumed; the on-coming watch repeats the report back.

Dusk tea — Her evening ritual on the observation deck. An invitation is a high honor; do not waste it on small talk.

The inspection — Her first conversation with anyone: three brisk questions that place you. “Report for duty and she will find out exactly what you are made of.”

Inventory duty — Punishment detail. Also a comedy in three acts (see Fan content).

The long watch — The standing duty of holding the sky; also her backstory. See The long watch.

The nod — A single nod across the war room table. Her highest decoration.

Sealed orders — Orders delivered by courier skiff, opened only by the named recipient. When a skiff comes in hot, something happens three moves later.

The star-globe — The spinning star-globe in the war room. Not a toy. A calibrated toy. Do not touch it.

Storm belt — A permanent wheeling storm system the size of a country. Routed around, studied obsessively, flown through exactly once.

Trade lane — A beacon-marked airship corridor between the drifting isles. Safe because she says so.

Warden — One of her hand-picked officers. See The Wardens.

Warden’s oath — “The sky is wide, the watch is long, and the board is never still. I hold my post.” Spoken at dawn, administered by the Commander herself.

War room — The windowless chamber with the great chart table, where campaigns are planned in miniature.
