Vermont Legacy
Four decades in Vermont public life — what the state gave him, and what he gave back.
The town-meeting politician
Sanders’s political style is inseparable from Vermont’s town-meeting tradition: open, argumentative, face-to-face. Throughout his career he has held town meetings across the state, and supporters and journalists alike describe his accessibility to constituents as exceptional — a characterization this site attributes to its sources.
Burlington’s waterfront
The most visible physical legacy of his mayoralty is the Burlington waterfront on Lake Champlain. His administration’s fight to keep the waterfront public rather than luxury condominiums is still cited — by supporters as his defining achievement, and in the local historical record as a turning point in the city’s development.
Vermont’s independent streak
Sanders is both product and symbol of Vermont’s willingness to elect independents: the state has sent an Independent to the Senate continuously since 2007, and its other senator, Patrick Leahy (1975–2023), and his successor Peter Welch are Democrats who worked closely with him. Vermont voters re-elected Sanders in 2024 with a wide margin over Republican Gerald Malloy.
Burlington College
A harder chapter: Jane O’Meara Sanders served as president of Burlington College from 2004 to 2011, and the small private college closed in 2016 amid financial pressures. Reporting on the closure attributed it to debt and enrollment declines; the matter was publicly disputed, and this site does not adjudicate it.
The national export
Vermont’s political culture — small-donor fundraising, town halls, direct voter contact — became the template for Sanders’s presidential campaigns, which exported the Vermont model nationally. Whether that export helped or hurt the state party is debated; the fact of the export is not.
