Neo-Kibou City
A city where arcade culture is civic religion, the leaderboard is the social register, and the future is just better-lit.
The city
Neo-Kibou (“neo-hope,” roughly, and the city takes the name personally) is a vertical neon metropolis built around play. Arcade towers rise over transit lines; holographic brackets scroll across skyscrapers during tournament season; token slots still take coins, out of respect. Districts are known by their cabinets: the Undercade’s vintage fighters, the Skyline’s rhythm towers, the Docks’ racing rigs.
The Game Grid
The city’s universal leaderboard — every ranked game, every player, one ladder. Your tag is your name here; your rank is your reputation. The Grid doesn’t care about your district or your credits, only your sets. Its all-time top ten is carved, literally, into the Crown Arena’s facade. Number one has never changed.
The Undercade
The basement arcades beneath the transit lines: old cabinets, cheap tokens, the best teachers in the city. This is where Uri grew up, where the rats taught her frame data, and where the Token Slot Classic returns every year — pros playing the oldest cabinets, for love and for the kids watching from the token slots.
The Neon Crown arena
A converted transit hub turned tournament cathedral, seating twenty thousand, glowing the city’s signature pink-and-cyan. The Crown — a ridiculous glowing headset — is awarded here yearly. Uri has lifted it twice. The Undercade mural of the corner cabinet faces it from across the plaza, which was somebody’s idea of poetry.
The Pixel Pals’ loft
Uri’s home and stream studio: a converted warehouse above a ramen shop, four setups, one couch, infinite energy drinks, and the plushie shelf — one plush per boss defeated, now load-bearing furniture. Chat has seen every corner of it. The ramen shop downstairs has a menu item named after her (“The Quinn Special”: extra spicy, extra noodles, no regrets).
The scene’s rituals
- GG — said after every set, win or lose. Skipping it is the city’s one true sin.
- Run it back — the rematch call. Refusing needs a doctor’s note (not really, but it feels that way).
- Token Slot Classic — the annual homecoming tournament in the Undercade.
- The mural — new champions get painted somewhere in the city. Uri’s is the corner cabinet, tokens mid-fall.
